(Thought I posted this earlier but can't see it now)

Anyway,

My Friend got a letter of confirmation that he has been successful in a transfer within a company (from Dublin to down the country) in a position in which he is qualified. He wrote back accepting the position.

This was about 6 months.

My friend had arranged to move his life down the country due to this. (Moved housing arrangments, childcare, family etc)

Unfortunatley some other person had also been offered the exact same post by another manager at this company (verbal offer).

The offer of this job was then withdrawn from my both parties until the situation was resolved. My friend who had at this time spent a good deal of money arranging the move etc.

There was a big ruckass involving unions and management and each of the parties who had been offfered the job. There is still no resolution to this..
The union involved is really poor.

What would be the legal situation if you have been offered (in writing) a job and then, just like that, you are told you dont have the job.

Does my friend have a legal leg to stand on if they decide to take it further or is it ultimately up to the company to decide what happens ?

Any ideas ?

If he had a letter of confirmation, then I would imagine he would be in a better position than the person who just had the verbal agreement. He should see a solicitor.

It's a difficult one.

If the company has operations in different parts of the country, there may well be a clause in the contract allowing them to relocate him.

These things are best sorted out by negotiation, but if he wants to pursue it, he should see a solicitor who specialises in employment law.
