Job but no written confirmation or terms and conditions

Hi! All, after - getting my refs, college actually phoned my future employer (accademic supervisor and reference uncontactable again!) and gave refs, there is still no letter re. my job, salary start date etc. The interview was three weeks ago, and I have to get schools for my children as it will involve moving.

After much toing and froing, last Monday they said they would send an email out to me and then a letter detailing my terms and conditions. They told me verbally what the salary was and when my start date would be - over the phone - end May is the start date.

However, I have been offered a permanent job in civil service dept (I have been on a panel for 2 years). It's not what I would want to do, but if the other job in Castlrea doesn't come to pass, then I will take it. However, I am under pressure to sign the civil service contract. They are riging me up every second day to know if it is in the post. I have told the job in Castlerea (which I would much prefer) about this, and that I would need confirmation in writing of the job they are offering me, before I could turn downb a permanent job in the civil service. The job in Caslterea is with a voluntary organisation.

Anybody any idea what's happening here and how do I deal with it? I'm concerned as I've had the post this morning and there's no letter from them in the post.

Thanks.

Personally I be very reluctant to work for a company that had such disregard for a potential employee in your situation that they couldn't put a basic job offer in writing.

job but no confirmation in writing

Hi! Sunny, they're my sentiments exactly. They know I have two children to organise in new schools, and I've already said I needed confirmation in writing. They promised confirmation in writing a week ago, but still nothing. I think I'll take the safer, though not as interesting option.

Interestingly, when my referre phoned to give my reference, she left a message, and no one phoned her back. I though this was a little strange too!

Can you phone the HR contact and ask them to email the contract etc to you while you are talking to them?

Will all the stresses that you've outlined (on other posts) a nice permanent civil sevice job would go a long way to making your life stable and stress free. Charity funding is being cut left right and center.

Agree with Bronte, Elaine. Take the CS job for now and get some stability back. You'll be a lot stress free once thesis is totally done and dusted - interview over etc. (been there, done that and didn't realise the stress it caused until it was over).

Voluntary organisations will not be stable employers in this climate as they are having funds cut and it's harder to get donations in.

If they are treating you this way now.......wait until they have you as an employee.

Have dealt with Voluntary organisations in the past, and my experience is they have little consideration for employees ...

a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush

Take the CS job and you can organize your life around your job and your kids.
Voluntary organizations tend to assume that you have no life outside the organization and that you are available on demand.

If they can treat their staff like this spare a thought for the volunteers

The voluntary organisation could be waiting for confirmation of funding, and you will face this uncertainty every year!
