damson - did it ever work for you?
Yes, it does.Does [broken link removed] work for you?
I'm using Windows 2000, so the path above doesn't seem to apply, but my control panel has a program "Java plug-in 1.3.1" and when I go into it, the box beside Enable Java Plug-in is checked. What version of Java do you have installed (Start -> All Programs -> Control Panel -> Java -> General -> About...)?
Sorry - the path to the Java control panel applet is different on Windows 2000 and I was referring to XP. I've been running the Java Runtime Environment 5 (aka 1.5) for a while now so maybe this later version is required in order to run the calculator? I wasn't aware that it had been updated such that it required the latest version of Java to run.damson said:I'm using Windows 2000, so the path above doesn't seem to apply, but my control panel has a program "Java plug-in 1.3.1" and when I go into it, the box beside Enable Java Plug-in is checked.
Karl Jeacle said:It was a simple problem. I upgraded my development system to 1.4.2,
and by default, javac was generating class files that would not work
with Microsoft's old JVM. I'm now doing "javac -target 1.1" to ensure
that the calculator will run on older machines.
Unfortunately, because Microsoft stopped releasing their JVM at 1.1
and it doesn't include Swing support, newer versions of the calculator
will require Sun's plugin. For example, one example of a change that I
want to make soon is the addition of country specific currency formats
i.e. e123,456.78 will be displayed as 123.456,78e. To keep Irish users
happy, perhaps you could change any AAM FAQ links for the calculator to
point to http://www.jeacle.ie/mortgage/ie/
Karl Jeacle said:I will use Javascript to check if the MS JVM is being used.
As the "eu" page will require a feature that is only present in the new
calculator (i.e. alternative currency format), I will display a message
asking the user to download Sun's latest plugin.
The "ie" page will not require a feature present in the new calculator
so I will go ahead and load the existing calculator, but will display
a message saying that downloading Sun's latest plugin will enable the
user to see the new version.
So please do update any AAM links to point to "ie", and feel free
to copy any of our discussion to AAM.
