Itunes/itouch :Storing Music.

I transferred all my CD's onto Itunes on my laptop. I don't play music from the laptop, it's just to facilitate transfer onto my Itouch. The amount of music is large, around 27GB. Is it possible to not save all this music on my laptop, yet still be able to download new music, and synch it onto the itouch?

I have backed up all music onto an external hard drive BTW.
 
Yes.
In iTunes change the iTunes media folder location to your external hard drive.
You will have to create a new library and add folder to library.
 
Thanks Koolkid, can you tell me how to change this. I've been looking on itunes, but can't find it? Where is it located?
 
You don't have to sync music. You can turn it off and just drag what you want over.

As a result you don't need all the music in itunes all the time.

But to be honest the whole iTunes/iPod works simpler if you do. Hard drives are cheap enough.

Perosnally I don't keep itunes installed all the time because it consume so much resources.

My main MP3 player doesn't use iTunes though.

Thanks, that's the link I needed ! I have itunes on, but I have disabled all it's updates and disabled it from the start-up menu. It's not too bothersome now.

Goto your music folder . There will be a folder in that named iTunes.
Cut/Paste that into your desired location on your hard drive.
Open iTunes & it will tell you library not found, select browse & navigate to the location where you pasted it.
When it opens goto Edit>Preferences>Advanced & set iTunes media folder location.
To tidy up at this stage I would Edit > Select all > Delete music.
Only delete from library in the next window select keep file.
Then goto File> Add folder to library> and browse to the folder containing all your music.
