Items not covered under 16day return in Argos

I was looking at an mp3 player recently in Argos (only a small 1 gig for my son) and was told it was non returnable under their 16 day policy. When I enquired about what exactly that meant I was told that it could be returned if it was broken, but if I got it home and just didnt like it I couldnt bring it back.

Can they do that?

Yes this is fully in compliance with consumer legislation. A shop is only obliged to accept a return if it is faulty (not merchantable quality) and then they must offer you the choice of the three r's: Repair, Replacement or Refund.

If you simply don't like something, a shop is under no obligation to you: caveat emptor applies. Obviously most shops go well beyond this and will exchange or refund products.

Yes. The Argos 16 day returns policy on most items is at their own discretion and for some items they only offer the statutory minimum returns policy as outline above (i.e. refund if faulty).

They certainly can. I found out the hard way when i bought a digital camera from them. They didnt tell me at the time of purchase and when i bought it back as it was not what i required they told me that any items that have a small sign (like a cross) beside it in their catalogues it means that there is no return unless faulty. Ive stopped shopping there.

Personally I have never had any problem with seeing what exceptions there are to their normal 16 day refund policy.
 
You must also ensure with any item that can be returned that you have ALL the packaging it came in. Took me two 1 hour trips recently to return an item, luckily box was in recycling bin :)
 
The problem here is buying "sight, unseen". Somebody told me that Argos and Homebase are one and the same, basically, and that if want to look the furniture, say, go to homebase to view it. It's usually dearer in Hoembase but you can then go to Argos to purchase after seeing it. THis is hearsay, not experience, I hasten to add!
 
I have to admit I was impressed with Argos recently. We ordered a sofa for our apartment and they called us with a deliver date 3 weeks later (as expected) and then a few days later we changed our mind before the sofa was delivered. Called Argos with our order number and they cancelled the order and gave us a full refund, even the delivery charge. Great service!

Just in case anyone goes looking I've seen the furniture in both and they don't appear to be the same. Perhaps some items are. Homebase are also now doing a lot of catalogue furniture which is not on view in their shops.
 
An occasional poster here on AAM is known to have taken out a nice new camcorder for his 2 week holiday and returned said item to Argos under the 16 day policy on return from the holiday! Perhaps this is why they introduced these restrictions.

slightly off topic...
But I was in argos last week and the manager told me that anyone can
inspect any item they have in stock before purchase.All you have to do is go to the customer service point and tell them what you want to look at.

Seemingly most people are not aware of this.But argos are happy to let you look .

That's good to know-but I suspect that it is at the discretion of whoever is on he CS desk at the time. However, if you don't ask.....

Two things that need a mention:

1. Their 16 day return policy has now changed to 30 day return which is more in line with most shops 28 day return policy. This rule changed at the end of January when their new catalogue was released.

2. They have always had the option 'to view' items at their customer service desk. The only problem with this is that they withdraw the service at busy periods such as week-ends etc. The policy can vary from shop to shop with regard to what is classed as a very busy time.

I always find Argos to be accommodating so if you have a problem always ask for the supervisor or Manager.
