Bringing the other half out for an Italian on Sat nite. 1st nite out in months ( 21 week old baby! ) Any recommendations for a really nice Italian on the Southside?

Many thanks

IMHO most Italian places are pitched at the lower end of the market so while there are a lot of OK ones there doesn’t seem to be any really nice ones. It’s all pasta and pizza and none of the really nice stuff you can get in Italy.
The best OK one that I know is the one opposite the morgue pub in templeogue village.

I found one in Blackrock to be very good-the name is Da Robertos.

There is a real 'authentic' Italian in Temple Bar, around the IFC. The name escapes me at the moment, it might be Trastevere???

Try Lisas Trattoria in Terenure, it is reviewed on [broken link removed] Food is excellent, one of the best Italians in Dublin, try the homemade sausages or meatballs.

I enjoyed a night in Il Posto on Stephens Green a while back. It's just beside the LUAS stop so commuting is very easy. There were loads of Italian families eating there, which is always a good sign.

There's one in the grounds of the Old Orchard Pub in Rathfarham - can't remember the name.

Used to be Little Ceasar's - Had a pretty bad experience their many years ago - real 'production line' type restaurant - only barely upmarket from Eddie Rockets.

I might also suggest [broken link removed] (by the way, just taken over by new Management so their website is not up to date). (Menus are now completely changed, prices are cheaper than the overpriced stuff in that link (and the food has much improved). I think they also have free music in the bar downstairs on Saturday night.

Link above will give you an idea of what it looks like.

You might also consider [broken link removed]. I'd highly recommend both. Incidentally, both La Banca and Prego's specialise in coeliac food and all menus are coeliac friendly.

Another option in city centre, is Il Baccaro. Looks like an Italian trattoria and is located in Meeting House Square in Temple Bar.

By the way, I'd disagree with recommendation for Lisa's Trattoria in Terenure. Decor inside looks like someone's sitting room and the food isn't all that impressive either. Then again, it depends on what you want.

I have no association with any of the above. Enjoy your evening.

CMCR,

I totally disagree about both La Banca and Pregos. Both used to be owned by the same people, I d'ont know if they still are now. Have been in La Banca twice, food ok, but massively overpriced for what was served. I didn't know it is under new management, might check the new menu out now.

Have not eaten in Pregos Restaurant, but have had take aways twice. First time, got pizza with an uncooked base , second time, garlic bread was just a load of dough. Granted, have not eaten in their Restaurant, but the take aways were very poor. Nicer Pizzas from the Chipper accross the street.

MandaC: Before last Sunday night I would have agreed with you about La Banca. The menu was over priced etc. However we were pleasantly surprised on Sunday - a new menu, prices okay and the food was very good. It looked like there were new front-of-house staff and in general we were left with "we'll come back here again soon" feeling. The last time we were there (which was perhaps over a year ago) we were none too impressed. Never even knew that Pregos existed. Must give it a try some weekend! BTW No connection with either of the above restaurants.

I used to go to Ar vicoletto on Crow St (Temple Bar). Its the best I know. You usually need to book as its a small place. Seems fairly popular with the ol' celebs, sitting beside Guggi and Gavin Friday one night (are they celebs ? :) ) and Jim Corr was in there another night. Although its so small its a bit crowded at times, thats the only reason I dont go anymore.

Anyways its not a bad spot for Italian food but maybe its not far south enough for where you are looking.....

Considering what passes for celebrity nowadays, I suppose they are! Any frequenters of the Dundrum Town Centre (me!) will no doubt have spotted Guggi rolling his own (cigs!) and having brekkie at Brambles cafe. He's almost part of the furntiure there! :)
