Has anybody been to the lake district in Italy? The only time we can go is early July. Can anybody recommend a nice area? We are looking for nice restaurants and nice scenery and somewhere that is not too quiet but not too busy either!

Thanks

Bellagio on Lake Como. [broken link removed]

We flew with Ryanair to Bergamo. Got airport bus in to Bergamo for a couple of Euro. Because of late flights, overnighted in Bergamo. (expensive enough). Next day got train from Bergamo to Varenna (one easy change en route) When we arrived in Varenna hopped on regular boat across to Bellagio. Stayed in studio apartment for circa €65 per night in centre of Bellagio.

A few years back we stayed on the southern end of Lake Garda, in the quaint town of Peschiera del Garda. We hired a car so toured around the lake and travelled to Verona, try the opera there it's excellent. We also did a day trip to Venice by train. The Dolomite mountains will provide breathtaking views if you're into that.

We stayed in a place called Ossucio a couple of years ago but it was really to quiet - althought the apartments were lovely & the views over the lake - to die for. Como town looked a nice spot & Bellagio. We flew into Milan & paid for the owner of the apartments to pick us up. Didn't bother hiring a car just got the ferries & the bus around the place - if Lake Como is good enough for George Clooney - it's good enough for me!

Riva La Garda was a good location.
Travel Department have tours to Riva and well organised, We enjoyed it anyway.

You can fly to Bergamo and get a train to Desenzano with one change on the way. Desenzano is a lovely size. You can hop on a boat across the lake to Sirmione or get a bus up the side of the lake to the beautiful town of Saló.

Thanks you all for your replies. I have booked a flight to Bergamo and I am checking out the places you have recommended. Thanks again.

Riva La Garda was a good location.

Second that. Riva is beautiful. We were there a few years ago in September. Nice restaurants and cafes, fabulous scenery and very relaxing. Hire a car and visit the other towns on Lake Garda or head into the mountains.

Gardaland is also an excellent place to visit if you have kids or are a big kid. Kinda like Eurodisney.

We stayed in Malcesine. It was a lovely town narrow streets lots of nice resturants and bars and lovely shops. There was plenty to do walking and cycling and boat trips to other towns.
There was a good buzz around in the evening also and good public bus. We went to Venice on the bus very cheap. We did spend 2 days in Sirmonie it was nice but had an older crowd and was very quite at night.
