Is there such a thing as cat-proof carpet?

Well, I have 3 cats and one of them loves scratching the carpet in the bedroom... I've just ripped the carpet off my stairs and had kind of planned to restore them, but they are in a dire state so I don't think I'd survive trying to revive the old wood. So now i face the dilemma of what to put on the stairs, naturally I would have gone for seagrass or similar, but I fear that this will be heaven to cats' claws! Any ideas anyone?

The only cat-proof carpet I know is ceramic or porcelain tiles ! We have tiles downstairs, wooden stairs & wooden floors upstairs. Even then, if they don't have carpet to scratch they find something else, like the sofa or anything else handy. We have 2 tabbies and they find ways around your efforts to thwart them. You can try catnip scent scratching posts or other similar but if you have carpet anywhere they're going to continue once they get the habit.

In this instance i would put a dog on the stairs...

How about covering the stairs in a wooden layer so that they look restored, bit of work but can look well.

How much would that cost and where would I get a such a wooden layer? The cats didn't scratch the old carpet that was on the stairs, but I'm sure if I put a nice new one on it it will be mayhem.
