is probate necessary-entire estate to spouse

If a couple own a house and have a small bank account. On the death of one is it necessary to get a grant of probate or will house and a/c transfer to the survivor automatically. There was a will leaving every thing yo the other.
If probate is necessary what would it cost. House worth €100k and a/c's worth less than €20k.

My own parents were in a similar position to the OP's question. Assets were a house and bank accounts, all in joint name with a will leaving everything to the survivor. When my dad died last year, we were advised by our solicitor that there was no need to take out probate
