I am going to upgrade to sky+ hd from sky.
I have a crt thompsons tv about 7 years old. Is this a digital tv or do I have to buy a new TV to receive the hd channels I will be getting with sky+hd?

Unfortunately to get the extra benefits of HD you will have to invest in a new TV. You will still be able to view your HD channels on your exisitng TV, just not in HD...

What if I bought a second hand widescreen tv.How would I know if it was digital or not?

I think you're asking the wrong question.

If you're getting a SKY HD service, then you need to make sure that the TV you get is HD, or HD ready. 'Digital' is not the issue.

I have a 10 year old CRT TV that is able to handle the upc digital service. However, neither the TV, not the upc service, are HD (high Definition).

You need a HD ready TV, make sure it is at least 100 hertz for best piicture quality, they hae come down hugely in price. Try DID or Power City...
