Is my problem a Vista Problem?

Please help me. I am beginning to pull my hair out in frustration at this stage. Bought Dell computer 3 wks ago running on windows vista. For some reason the system has begun to jam – basically I can do nothing other than unplug the computer to shut it down and I am well aware this is doing harm in itself but I have no other choice. This really only happens when I try to connect to the internet. I am with Perlico wireless broadband and have explained my problem to them but they say my broadband is fine but they cannot confirm compatibility with Vista yet. Box coming up on screen saying “Driver blocked due to incompatibility problems”. I can drive a car and put petrol in it but if it breaks down I am in big trouble. So be it with computers. Can anyone shed any light on the above.
 
It's much too soon to be relyingon Windows Vista for mission-critical work.

There are many reported problems with Vista, including that many devices are not compatible with it.

Most businesses are avoiding Vista for at least a year while the problems are being resolved.

Try restoring your system to the state it was in when you got it from Dell & if it still has the problem, report it to Dell as faulty.
 
Tks technologist. Bought the computer from Dell with vista pre installed so guess I am one of the guinea pigs. Would it be worth considering unintalling vista and installing XP. Kills me going to the expense after buying PC package. Before I do this I need to be sure that it is vista causing the problem. The only two downloads I have made are BlueCoat (think that was the name of it)child protection software for internet and AVG anti virus which I researched on AAM beforehand and nobody seemed to have had any probs. what is my next step??
 
If you install XP, you will not get support from Dell. Next step is to revert to the factory configuration to see if the problem can be reproduced, otherwise Dell will claim that your software caused the problem.

We recently received an order of 5 new Dell inspiron laptops with windows vista pre-installed. 3 of the 5 laptops had exactly the same problem that you describe. They are also all extremely slow, and prone to "freezing". I rang Dell technical support last week and to my surprise I got through to a "human being" almost immediately. He talked me through the solution of the "Driver being blocked due to incompatibility problems" and it was sorted within a few minutes. Definitely worth giving them a ring and expressing your dissatisifaction! I am very unimpressed with these laptops though and certainly wouldn't recommend them to anyone.
 
Hi me back again. Well things got progressively worse with my system jamming up to three times a day and having to be rebooted. Rang Dell and they directed me over the phone how to bring the computer back to factory settings which I completed successfully. Problem now is that I cannot get wireless modem up and running. With Perlico - Zyxel wireless modem with USB. I can get internet access with Ethernet cable connected (which defeats the purpose of “wireless” internet. As soon as I disconnect it I lose internet access. Any ideas???
 
Could you try to get Dell to send you a Windows XP disk? - they might give you a sizeable discount because of all the problems you seem to be having.
 
Anybody buying from Dell imminently might like to know that you can still get XP machines from their outlet (www.dell.ie/outlet). I don't think that you can get anything but Vista from their main store.
 
Can I ever be 100% sure that it is vista that is causing the problem. Don’t mind getting rid of it and installing XP but need to be sure that this will sort things out for me once and for all. Can Any of you computer buffs out there answer this?
 
I don't think anyone can guarantee you that vista is the cause of your problems but it is very likely.

If there are a lot of people complaining to Dell about this then they might lean on Microsoft to patch the issue or they may release a driver update themselves to sort this out.

It might be worth installing XP on the system while leaving Vista. You could set up a dual boot option to let you use Windows XP for now but to move back to Vista once updates for the problem are released?
 
IMO dell install so much rubbish on their machines it slows down the machine regardless if its Xp or Vista. I usually uninstall their AV (whatever it is), Dell Support, Update manager, Sonic, Roxio etc. Then install AVG and ZoneAlarm. Usually speeds up a machine no end.

I suggest looking up Delltalk forums. You usually find an answer their somewhere. The web has loads of info on this problem too. For example...

A 'pc decrapifier' says it all..... I have heard that Windows Vista has at least 4 or 5 viruses already and its only been launched. Have you ever heard of a Mac decrapper?? I've been using macs for a long time now and have never had a virus. When are people going to cop on to this. Macs are far superior, and user friendly. However, I'd recommend getting rid of vista asap and install XP.

People simply have to take the time to learn how to use and maintain their machine. Most don't bother. A computer is not a fridge. OSX has had a lot of updates and fixes as have Mac Hardware. I set up my retired father in laws PC about 2 yrs ago and he use the web a lot and he hasn't had a single virus in all that time.

Regardless Golidilocks has Vista, she doesn't have XP. Regardless which Computer or OS you have at some point you are going to need to update or patch it. In this case it seems some of the preinstalled software, Sonic or Roxio is has an incompatiblity with a vista update.
 
You didn't read the links. It would seem there was an update that broke something, and there an update that fixes it. As you say yourself this has only started to happen. When you got the machine 3wks ago it worked fine out of the box. Something has happened in the meanwhile.
 

I use a mac but I believe the only reason there are few viruses for it is that it is not worth the virus writers time! They can make much more money writing viruses for the PC as they are still 90% of the market or something like that!

If Macs ever get 50% of the market they will have just as many viruses as Vista in my opinion. (Vista has a lot of security features that puts it on par with OS x re security I think)
 
OSX is based on Unix. Unix is better designed re: security. Vista is better than XP in that regard but it looks like awkward way they've copied the Unix like security features. However XP can be secured, all you need to is a few small AV apps and a decent firewall which auto update, and don't run as admin unless you need to.

However this thread is not about that, its about (apparently) a software update thats has a problem and can be fixed. You won't know for sure until you fix the error.

Almost true Clubman - you can only buy Vista directly from the Main site but if you build your pc, save to basket and ring Dell sales they will change the OS from Vista to XP if you email the basket to them - very simple really - i've done it twice in last couple of weeks.

Also a poster further up mentioned Vista on 5 laptops and not being that impressed with the laptops - you didn't mention spec - how much RAM you running - remember that Vista requires at least twice as much ram to run like the dog that is XP
