Is Jobseekers application required for PRSI contributions over the summer?

Hi Folks,
I've run several searches but I have not been able to find my question/answer precisely so here we go...

My Sister's sister in law is a sub teacher & has more or less just been released for the summer as the Kids are starting to stayhome for exam study & the schools have an excess of Teacher capacity between now & end of the school year. She want to avail of PRSI credits for the summer months.

She has started an application for JobSeekers allowance with the knowledge that she will not receive it due to the means in her household being as high as they are.
A detailed questionaire requesting evidence of her household means has been sent out & she knows this will be moot because there's no way they will get Job Seekers allowance. The question is whether she still needs to address this Means test or can she skip this request & just get to the crux of the matter i.e. apply & receive PRSI credits.

Thanks folks for all the advice & experiences.

H.

Any use?

Can I claim social welfare for the summer months?

You can claim social welfare for periods when you are unemployed but your payments may be deferred or delayed because of the percentage of holiday pay you received while working. Even if the amount of holiday pay received means that your social welfare payment will be nil, it is advisable to claim benefit regardless in order to maintain your PRSI credits over the summer months.

Hmm, although it is not explicitly stated in the second extract posted above, it does read to me like it is necessary to lodge an application for Jobseekers allowance in order to receive PRSI credits over Summer months. A prerequisite if you will.

If anyone know different, We'd love to hear about it.

Of interest to my own child they will not qualify either with the means in the house but maybe next summer with enough prsi contributions they might qualify for jobseekers benefit. I never thought about even trying to get her to sign on for credits. Hopefully she will have a year contract and apparently if it is not maternity cover they get paid but it is proving more difficult that we thought it would be. Might get her to sign on for credits one way or another so that come next summer she has some work. Although then there is July provision so it would only be credits for August something to think about for sure.

You can phone your local intreo center and request to apply for credits only.
Good point.
You can sign on for credits, if you are not entitled to a social welfare payment or you are a qualified adult on your spouse's, civil partner's or cohabitant's social welfare payment as long as you:
  • Are unemployed
  • Available and capable of work
  • Genuinely seeking work
  • Have paid or credited PRSI contributions in either of the last two tax years
BTW - since the original post mentions Jobseeker's Allowance, this should be noted:
You do not automatically get credits if you are getting Jobseeker's Allowance. You must have paid or credited PRSI contributions in either of the last two tax years to get credits with Jobseeker's Allowance.

Thanks @Gerry Dunne. This was what we wanted clarification on. I'll pass it on.

Anyone take a bet that the local Intreo office will insist on taking the Job Seekers allowance path regardless? Let's see...
Maybe I need to have my scepticism checked.
