Is it worth while buying car up north?

Hi,

Started my search for a bigger family car...and struggling to get my head around whats good value as I know nothing about cars.

There doesn't seem to be much difference these days between North and Southern prices - would this be a correct observation?

Looking at second hand (around 2008) estate car like a Volvo V50.

Appreciate your comments

Emma

I bought mine in the North on Feb 15th.
It was actually imported into the North from mainland UK.

I bought a 08 Honda Accord 2.2 Diesel.
I paid 9100 euro for the car, and then I paid 2567euro for the vRT.
Check out carzone to see how what you get for that.

Bear in mind that a 2006 or 2007 Accord costs 867euro to tax; mine cost 302.
I think it's worth it.

Thanks turtle77. Your car looks great!

I bought my present car up North in 2005, but I was living there then, so it was different. I imported it for free when I permanently moved to Ireland.

I don't suppose anyone knows if I could then trade it in up there against something else?

Thanks again,

Emma

I don't know if they accept trade-ins from the Republic; to be honest I doubt it.
Oh, the exchange rate is quite good now.. a good time to invest maybe?

Hi turtle 77
That seems like a really good deal you got. Would you mind telling me how you got VRT down to Eur2,567.
When I look at Honda Accord 2.2 2008 on VRT calculator I keep getting figures of Eur7.5k

Thanks
S

You would have to re-export it to NI, I'm not sure how you go about that. Some dealers up north take Southern trade ins for cash value. Best to sell yourself down south and head north with cash. Slim

I have bought my previous 2 cars in the UK and brought them.

But my last car I bought here its was about 7k cheaper then getting it in the UK paying flights, ferry, petrol and vrt, numberplates, nct and new tax.

It will depend on the car, and particular model and VRT on that model.

I would say you may be better to look here at the moment there are some great buys around. plus your keeping the money in the country.

It's like anything I believe. Buyer be aware or beware. You can have great stories and some disasters also, no matter what side of the border. Typically the spec in UK is better and mostly higher milage has less impact becasue its on better roads.
If you have a trustworthy contact then by all means go for it especialy with exchange at moment and if you are looking for a better spec car. Remember the hidden costs, travel is not cheap and then who do you go back to if something goes wrong?
Bog standard stay at home IMHO where you can do a trade. Something special with cash in hand buy as you feel comfortable but do the reseach well first and be sure to get the Credit History checked and someone like the AA to look over the car if you can;t trust yourself.
