Is it worth upgrading to the new Windows 7?

Hi all, just wondered if anyone had looked at the free trial version of Windows 7? The trial seems to be closed now (or at least I can't find it anywhere). I'm using Vista at the moment and just wondering what people's opinions are on taking the upgrade to Windows 7?

Are the new features significantly different and useful?

I'd b e more interested to hear from you was it worth upgrading to Vista?

I didnt upgrade to Vista, it came with the desktop when I bought it last year. I was considering paying for the downgrade to XP, but decided I'd give Vista a go despite all the negativity that I'd heard about it. Vista is ok, I've got used to it although there's some features that still annoy me, like constantly clicking the 'run as administrator' option to run programs and constant authorisation to open and download web stuff. Just seems a bit OTT to me. But other than that I havent found anything majorly inconvenient about it. Not sure the XP downgrade would have been worth it for me so I'm glad I didn't bother.

So, any opinions/info on Windows 7?

Haven't even seen a version "Live" yet, but I've used Vista and found it a bit slow and the visual effects tedious after a while compared to XP on like-for-like hardware.

That having been said there's been a similar story every time Microsoft produces a new OS - it eats up any increases in time or throughput made available by new CPU / RAM / HD speed.

Reports about Windows 7 so far suggest its now what Vista is supposed to have been when it came out.

The fact that Microsoft lost the plot a long time ago cannot be lost on people who read that, at first, Windows 7 notebooks would be limited to running three applications at once, since discontinued due to "feedback"...

I sometimes read The Register for relatively current gossip about a new OS as well as problems during its life cycle, or indeed pre-launch offers.

You can disable the 'run as administrator' option

==> control panel ==> user accounts ==> Click on 'Turn user account control on or off' and uncheck the box!

I don't think it's ever a good idea to use a beta or version 1.0 of any new software.

Let them sort out the inevitable issues that will arise first and then, if you wish, would be a better time to upgrade.

It was just that they are offering it half price initially, so that's the only reason that I was thinking about it.

I used Vista on a couple of machines for about a year and still hated it. Switched back to XP on some of them.

Switched to Windows 7 a couple of months back and its been great. Its now on a few of our computers. As quick as XP and no problems tbh. On one machine I can't get a driver for the fingerprint reader. Thats the only issue.

I've been running the beta version of Windows 7 for a week now, no problems at all, in fact a noticeable improvement in performance in general, so I'd recommend it.

I'm running Win 7 RC1 on 3 laptops and its very good.Had small problem with fingerprint reader because I had installed a vista driver which didn't work.I uninstalled the driver completely and Win7 update found a driver. Its a nice os which actually boots in less than a minute and also shuts down when required,is very light on resources,it will be the success that XP was.
