Is it unfair redundancy

Myself and another colleague recently qualified as Certified Public Accountants. I asked about receiving proper qualified accountant wages and was told not in this economic time and instead was put on redundancy notice. I was subsequently given another two weeks notice which runs out this friday. i have been offered stautory redundancy.

I have worked with the company for 7 years and my colleague for 4 years. We both do the same job. I do not know why I was the only person selected for redundancy while my colleague has changed her car and has now bought a new house and got help getting a mortgage for the house from our employers while i face redundancy. I do not have any ties at present but seem as if i was harshly treated.

Do I have a case for unfair dismissal? Please help
 
They have to give you the reason you were picked, so start by formally requesting it.
 
Strictly speaking, it's a person's job that becomes redundant - and the unfortunate job holder is the one to be let go.

If it's the case that you both had the same role but that you were the person "chosen" for redundancy, then you might have a case for unfair dismissal by virtue of your seniority. As the previous OP has said, you're entitled to know the rationale that was applied in deciding that YOUR job was the one to be made redundant.

I think many employers are using the current downturn to effect changes they wouldn't normally get away with.

Are you a member of a union to whom you can refer the matter ?
If not would you consider consulting with a solicitor conversant with employment legislation ?
