Going through my receipts for last year looking for a warranty note I noticed that my accountant didnt claim a large amount of vat back on one receipt.
It was for the period May - Aug 2008. Can I claim this back in retospect?
Thanks Mick

Pretty sure you can. You just submit an amended return for the period in question.

Hi Mick

Yes, you can file an amended or supplementary Vat return. If you're registered on Ros, this would be the easiest way to file it. Any resulting refund can be claimed as long as the return wasn't more than four years ago.

Although, you might do well to get onto the accountant to find out why it wasn't claimed. There might actually be a good reason for it.

Was the document in question an Invoice or a receipt. VAT can only be claimed on invoices.

It was an invoice from a US company, I paid vat and duty to a customs broker and the brokers invoice ( breakdown of vat and duty) was attached to the original sales invoice. My accountant is away at the moment but Im sure he'll have the answers for me. Thanks to everyone for the advice.
