Is it too early to plant trees / shrubs?

Mrs Roger is very keen to replant garden after major clearance towards the end of 2007. I'm hearing conflicting reports about planting right now - apparently the "golden rule" is never to plant before Paddy's day because of frost etc.

Any advice appreiciated.

Roger

If the ground isn't waterlogged or frozen sow away. I never heard of the St Patrick's day golden rule, in fact I was always of the impression that the winter time/early spring was the best time to sow trees. Google agrees with me too.

I agree with demoivre, this is the best time as the plants growth is dormant, its when plants are growing, that if you disturb the rootball, it might have consequences for the plants, esp tree. If you are buying plants, check the label or ask the gardener if the plant is frost hardy, but usually if its a hardwood species then you should be ok.

It's often best to wait until March before you plant your evergreens.
Windburn can be a factor....... [broken link removed]

With global warming you can plant well before Paddys !

My first daffodils are out already - is that early? it feels early for the daffs.
