This is just a special offer for a limited time though isn't it? I would imagine in that case it's because either a/ not too many people are using Dublin as their starting point and they're trying to increase business or b/ starting in Dublin is the most popular and used way of travelling and they are running a special offer that will endear them to as many customers as possible. Have you contacted them to ask why they are doing it and when they are going to do the same offer for journeys starting in Cork?
Yes, I emailed Irish Rail yesterday to ask if/when the offer was going to be extended to journeys commencing in other Irish cities. As yet, I have had no reply.
The Dublin offer is available until mid-August as far as I know.
Because I'm too fond of the leaba and end up being late I usually buy my train tickets in advance in Abbey St so as not to have to queue in the station. When I called in this morning to buy a ticket for Monday I was told I can only buy it on the day of travel. They were happy to sell me a full price one though.
I was told that this is one of the terms and conditions of the offer but nobody in the office could produce same when I asked to see them.
I saw the story in the newspaper when the offer broke. The reason Irish Rail gave at the time was that they had lots of capacity on trains going out of Dublin, but not as much going in, hence the offer.
I genuinely find that amazing. I thought the same trains usually went one way, then the other. As 99.9% of people I know tend to get return tickets, i.e. they will at some stage be going back to whence they came, I cannot see how the statment Irish Rail made can make sense! If the Dubs go one way, they will be coming back the other way and using up the capacity that doesn't exist. Which is the exact same as us culchies going to Dublin on the capacity that doesn't exist, and then using up the spare capacity on the way back!!
Irish Rail....Not there yet, but you're not getting there cheap if you're not a Dub...
I would imagine its a scam as the cost of the single to get back from the desiered destination (plus the €10) will in most cases cost more than a return would in the first place.
Single dublin/cork €50.00
plus €10 €60.00
5 Day Return €54.50
net loss €5.50
another great deal by the mighty Iron Road company of Ireland.
There’s also hot summer deals on sale from a range of stations in Leinster offering €8 off-peak day returns to the capital. Stations where the offer is available include: Dundalk, Drogheda, Laytown, Gorey, Arklow, Rathdrum, Wicklow, Portlaoise, Portarlington, Kildare, Newbridge and Sallins.
I don't live in Leinster, so still not any use to me.
No word back from Irish Rail yet either, doubt I will hear back from them as they probably can't come up with a legitimate reason for the discrimination.
