Interesting article in the Sunday Business Post about Pat Rabbid and the hissey fit he took when other party members suggested they should support the Tree huggers. I can see his logic, he had shafted and humiliated one of the grand old men of the party he took over in order to stay in bed with Enda Kenny so why should he p**s off his new bed-fellow to support some God dam socialist?
So the reason that we are having no election, if you accept the SB Post, is that Pat didn't want one. The Business post would not be Democratic Left's biggest supporters but since the Labour party ceased to exist the Irish Times seem to have taken on their old role as official news letter for the left, so at least they offer balance in a left wing dominated media.

I would have thought that the majority of media, newspaper and TV, was predominantly right wing...or maybe more accurately right of centre (whatever that means)!

IN the way they report the news and the topics they choose to cover on their current affairs programs. They have a distinct anti American slant and have long ago joined the shrill voices that condemn any and all in this country who do well and get rich, unless they are lawyers or "professionals".
Up until a few years ago the whole company was run by a group of workers party hacks.I don't have the details but some other kind soul might help me out....
At every election they roll out the same naval gazing left wing mutual admiration society to give "comment and analysis" on how things should go.
I have my own biases about America and so do you so if you find yourself agreeing with almost all of the news coverage on RTE about George W then they are not presenting a balanced picture.

Yes...but my bias is strictly based on Bush and his cronies and what they're turning that country into.
Sky News present similar broadcasting to RTE when it comes to the US and their foreign policy (these days). You don't get more right wing than Sky News now do you? This is a news company that prides themselves on showing you the allied bombing capability in great detail during any war...with little coverage ever given to what happens to the people who get hit by the thing.
I have to say, genuinely, that I have not seen any coverage on RTE in relation to the US that I would term left of center...and I am able to see through agendas pretty well (even if I may agree with some of them).

Incidentally, what was, a year ago, deemed anti-American or unpatriotic (if you were American) criticism of Bush and his policies in the media, has now very much moved into mainstream media content. We even saw a partial apology from Blair over the war yesterday.

I don't agree with you there piggy, the Oirish news that they show might be like RTE but their international news is as far right as RTE's is left.

What's his name on prime time who used to be on Today Tonight nearly gets over the table when interviewing FF or PD people.
Prime time did a piece a few months back about the scandal of Irish millionaires not paying Irish income tax and cited Tony O'Reilly as one of the culprits even though the man has lived in America for 20 odd years. All of the other people listed lived and paid their tax in other countries as well. Absolute crap (as Albert Reynolds would say) and a non story.
Prime time also ran a story about couples working in below average industrial wage jobs and how they couldn't afford to buy an average house in Dublin anymore because of all the greedy landlords and property developers, even though a couple who were both on below the average industrial wage could never afford to buy an average house in Dublin.
RTE and the Irish Times never report on all the good things that have happened over the last 6 or 7 years and preach a gospel of doom and darkness all the time.
The IT was the unofficial news letter for Mary Robinson when she ran as a Labour party candidate and spent years with it's head up the back passage of Dick Spring when he was running the smoked salmon socialist party.
I could go on but it's time to go home...

That's nonsense. Nearly all news is (if anything) pro-Israeli. Very little truth is told on the news. Just the facts (usually from the Israeli point of view - ie we bombed some militants and then a reply from the palestinian leaders - ie they bombed some children). Before all my fan club come out of the woodwork, the truth doesn't always necessarily have to be Israel was wrong.
Israel have been in the news of recent times for ALL the wrong reasons. Their wall has been deemed illiegal for instance. I've seen no pro-Palestinian reporting from RTE. None at all.

They never point out that there are 1 million Palestinians who live in Israel and are Israeli citizens. They never tell us why the Israelis blew up the guy they just blew up and how many people he killed.
Israel targets terrorists and accepts a high level of collateral damage. I believe they are wrong to do so but the Palestinians target children on busses. There is no comparison. One is excessive military action, the other is terrorism.
RTE never point this out.

I would rather they gave access to the media relative to the size of the party and not push the agenda of one party.

The job of the news is (or should be) to present the facts. Their job is not to apportion blame to any side or give a subjective history of the situation. Sometimes we get it (as we often see with Sky) but it shouldn't be.
That's the job of current affairs programmes.

They never tell us that the Palestinian population of Syria is more oppressed than those in Israel. They never point out that there are 1 million Palestinians who live in Israel and are Israeli citizens. They never tell us why the Israelis blew up the guy they just blew up and how many people he killed.

I don't want to turn this into an Israeli/Palestinian debate (we've had loads of them in the past) but there's more to it than that. The reason that terrorism has such large support throughout palestine is largely due to how palestine is treated by Israel and how they've been treated by them for a long time. Terrorism breeds terrorism. Let's not wade into this though. I'm too busy today

Okay...I'm finding myself just playing devil's advocate now...but...how many FF governments have we had over the past 25 years? Isn't it normal for any Irish news media to give them a hard time and welcome an alternative.
