Irish Life still taking direct debit on home/life cover

We bought a house in 2004. We took out a mortgage with PTSB and also took out a joint policy for life cover (with serious illness) in relation to our mortgage with Irish Life,we did this in the PTSB branch at that time.

We sold our house in October 2007 and bought a new house in November so we cleared the mortgage with PTSB and took out a new one mortgage again with PTSB. This time we decided to shop around and didn't go with Irish Life's cover for our new home.

My partner has now just realised that Irish Life have been taking out the policy amount every month since Oct 2007 until this date. He SHOULD have spotted this but he has an old fashioned account where he doesn't get a lot of statements so we only realised this until we got a letter from Irish Life this week about our policy.

I rang Irish Life and told them to stop the policy, they said they would but there would be no refund as we didn't instruct them to stop the policy when we sold.

I would have thought that with them being connected to PTSB it would have been automatic. The amount was always included in our mortgage amount. Do we have any right to a refund or do we just have to suck it up and realise we made a mistake.

Any advise appreciated.

suck it up im afraid. - very sloppy though when you dont know whats going in and our of ur accounts

I had a feeling that was the answer. Just a note to say that we don't have a joint account. I definitely would have noticed that immediately if it were out of my account. Tough financial lesson for him but it might get his a~~ in gear now to be more aware. Thanks for prompt response.
