Irish debit card

I have finally cleared my credit card and would never like to you use one again, however I have found it handy to use online, booking online etc. Is it possible in Ireland to get a debit card ? I know even if I put money on a credit card I would max it out. I plan on booking flights online with Ryanair but as far as I know they do not accept laser cards. Any suggestions?
 
There are a number of prepaid "credit" cards available. I think PTSB does one, and possibly the other major banks.
 
Also when Bank of Scotland launch their personal accounts soon i think they will have a debit card that will use the visa logo and not the laser logo but working in the same way as a visa card when using abroad etc. In other words if you dont have money in your current a/c then you cant use but it will be handy for booking flights etc..

Bear in mind that Laser is not accepted outside of Ireland in any case.

Yes - but that has nothing to do with Laser per se. That (and Cirrus and Plus+) is a separate card function allowing the ATM (not Laser) card to be used in ATMs abroad.

Maestro operates as a Debit card/Laser when abroad. The Maestro symbol will be on display in shops/restaurants where it is accepted. It's not terribly widely used & there can be a charge of approx 1.5%

Cirrus is the ATM function when abroad. ATM transactions cost the same as in Ireland when in a Eurozone country but normally have a charge of around 3.5% when in a different currency zone (therefore best to restrict use to only countries that use € except for emergencies)
 
I regularly use my Irish Laser card in Spain, supermarkets, buying petrol etc. with no problems
 
Maestro is the worldwide debit card, i.e the equivalent of the Irish Laser card.

Cirrus and Plus are the international ATM networks.
 
I know an earlier poster mentioned buying prepaid credit cards - here's a link for one (Permo based).

I haven't looked into the charges - but could still be worth it if you're a particularly ill-disciplined, card-happy shopaholic (esp with Christmas around the corner)
