Ipod Classic not working

[Newbie!]

So I opened ipod today and its completely dead. Tried to charge it (used two different chargers), nothing. I tried to reset it by holding menu and middle button, nothing. Cant restore factory settings as itunes isnt picking it up.
The computer picked up an unknown usb device but cant find the right drivers then. Before I give in and take it to the apple store, does anyone have any other suggestions?

It's probably not worth what they'll charge to even look at it at this stage.

If apple are going to charge a lot to repair it, try looking on gumtree I've seen ipod repair services listed there before under services- miscellaneous.

they've said the hd is dead and not worth repair. They did say however that could sell me a reconditioned one for €89. I thought that was a little cheap, even for a reconditioned one. What would you think?
