IP Address - is there a way to tell who the poster is??

Hi there,

Someone jokingly accussed me of making a post to a discussion board where you don't have to register. However, the board does capture the IP address of the person who makes the post. I know that I didn't make the post, but I'd like to prove this.

If I know the IP address, is there any way to resolve this and find out who / where the person who made the post was?

You can try but there is no guarantee. Try the IPWHOIS Lookup on this page (third form down in the middle column) to see what details can be deduced from the IP address. If the IP address is an organisational proxy or a dynamically allocated ISP address then it may be difficult to correlate the IP address to an individual.
