Investing in an Index Directly

I want to invest directly in an index (e.g. the DAX, FTSE). I don't want a managed fund. What is the most efficient (ie cheapest) way to do this? Do I have to go through a broker? Can I do it online?
 
Do you mean you want to buy an Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) that tracks the index?
 
I think so. I want something that exactly mirrors the index (or as close as possible). Not something that's "managed" by fund managers or requires management by me.
 
an ETF or and Index fund would suit you best. there are lots of threads on these.
