My new wife is on Invalidity Pension as she is unable to work and has been on it for the last 2 years, we got married last month and I am wondering am I entitled to claim her tax credits or would she have any? She has been unable to work for the last 6 years due to an accident.
I think Invalidity Pension is not means tested so I assume she will not be affected?

Thanks

Definitely you should claim as a married couple for tax reasons. Note that the IP is taxable and will be added to your earnings for income tax calculations. You should still be bet off though. Check out you tax liability with double allowances, credits etc but with both incomes added. Look up citizensInformation.ie and search for invalidity pension.

It would be best if you were taxed jointly (as a married couple) so she could give her personal tax credit to you.

She will of course retain her own PAYE tax credit as she has income (Invalidity Pension) which is taxable
