Interesting article in Saturdays Irish Times Review section

I read the front page of the Irish Times Saturday Review section with interest this weekend.
It was a piece entitled 'Bin Laden and Me' and concerned an Irishman who has converted to Islam and is now a spokesperson for a British Muslim party.

I don't have a link to the article unfortunately (the Irish Times website is subscription only) but among the quotes were the following:

Thats only the half of it...it gets worse.

Now I'm sure the moderators will want to delete this thread but I'd just like to point out that every word I just quoted is in this weekends Irish Times. It is in the public domain and I fail to see how my quoting an article in the main newspaper in the country can be considered in any way inflammatory. Unless you think the article itself is inflammatory, which would be fascinating because it is merely directly quoting the words of Mr.Khalid Kelly.
Perhaps Mr.Kelly is the one being inflammatory?

I think this article goes a long way to justifying everything I said in the previous (sadly locked) debate.

Re: Interesting article in Saturdays Irish Times Review sect

It is a pity that you did not put the comments in perspective. Your selective use of the comments might give some people a suspicion that you are simply trying to stoke up anti-Muslim feeling. The article makes it quite clear that, dangerous as Kelly is, he is in a tiny minority of Britain's Muslims and none of the estimated 300 to 800 members of his organisation has representation in any of Britain's 1000 mosques.

religious posts?

Brendan, while I totally agree with your post I thought religious postings were barred from AAM?

I don't think this kind of anti-Muslim claptrap has any place here.

Damned if I do and damned if I don't...

Hi Eldorado

A moderator's life is very difficult.

We deleted purely religious threads, some posts of which were offensive.

The issue of anti-American, anti-Western attacks is a fair one for discussion. We cannot delete any reference to the fact that seemed to be inspired by misplaced Muslim fundamentalism. It would make the discussion meaningless.

So we either allow the tabloid type anti-Muslim rhetoric and show how warped it is or we ban discussion of any topic such as the war on terror. I chose the second option.

We might go further and bar Letting Off Steam and the Craic altogether as these seem to be the source of most complaints. The problem with this approach is that people would still feel the need to share their opinions and jokes with the Askaboutmoney community and they would appear in Don'taskaboutmoney. We would delete them and get accused of censorship yet again.

Re: Damned if I do and damned if I don't...

How many active members were/are in IRA? How many members does it take to start a war, continue a war, hold-up a peace process? I mean are we talking a hundred, a thousand, several thousand.
I think there are maybe less than 500 people out there who are responsible for the above. So if there are a thousand muslims in England who believe in terrorism, wouldn't that be enough to start a war of terrorism. Even though the vast majority don't believe in it.
It only takes a few bad apples to ruin people's lives. If this Kelly fello is anything like the republican lunatics of the seventies then England is in for a rough time.

Re: Damned if I do and damned if I don't...

I doubt anyone would argue with much of what you've said Breeze.
What most people would have a problem with is the point ELCid seems to be trying to make above and in the War on Terror post. Perhaps he could clarify what point he is making in this post so that people can be very clear on it.

extremists

I caught a late-night comedian at the weekend, who made the point (much more amusingly than I will!) that getting quotes from the above type of extremist is like taking the views of the Grand Wizard of the KuKluxKlan as being representative of Western feeling about Muslims.

Extremists on whatever side are extremists, and fortunately rare.

The Point

Perhaps he could clarify what point he is making in this post so that people can be very clear on it.

Certainly, I'd be glad to, its not that obscure.

The point of my post was to establish that the previous comments I made regarding Islamic doctrine on that other (locked) thread were factual, based on Koranic text, and not my invention...in spite of the hysterical reaction of posters like you Piggy.

You now have it directly from the mouth of Mr.Kelly.

I don't think he's unrepresentative...just slightly more committed and prepared to state upfront and openly what Islam really means. I actually respect him for that, because unlike Piggy, he's no hypocrite.

the point

ELCid,

When you've finished having a go at piggy you might want to direct your comments to Brendan Burgess. He's the one who exposed your views for what they truly are.

There is a horrible tendancy on this board to continously pick at certain people, piggy being one of them. I think it's called trolling. I agree with Brendan, those comments were totally out of context.

Bridget also made a really good point about extremists. You sound like one of those people ELCid.

Mr.Kelly

I agree, he's mad, oughta be locked up. But the old 'there's only a few of them' line is a pretty tired one, don't you think? How do you know whats in peoples hearts or minds?

I don't. I just relate the facts, without dressing them up. Much as Kelly does.

The fact is that Mr.Kelly and his buddy Osama espouse nothing more or less than what is written in the Koran.

For a group with just 'a few' supporters, they've certainly caused plenty of mayhem in the world.

PS You think its called TROLLING?
I think you're called Piggy! (Troll is his favourite word).
