Motor Insured Driver Abroad

I'm going on holiday to Italy to stay with a friend and instead of hiring a car, my friend kindly offered me his vehicle to use. He enquired with his insurance company about adding me as a named driver and was quoted €700. Does anyone know if there is a cheaper way of doing this? Are there Irish insurance providers who provide this kind of cover?
