Insulation is driving me mad

Has anybody got any views on insulation. I'm driven daft trying to determine which is the best method of insulating above the average to give myself minimal heat loses. In the floor im placing a 75mm kinspan insulation under a 75mm screed. In the Roof im placing a 125mm Thermapitch board between the joist, then a 37.5mm plaster-board fixed to the internal side of the joists. Now the walls this is where im getting confused as what to do, im putting a 60mm therma board in the cavity. i am possibly going to insulate the inside of the internal leaf, firstly i was going to do this with a 37.5mm dry-lining from Kingspan, i then looked at placing some airflex insulation on some battens then placing the plasterboard. I then switched my attention to Triso Super 10 placed in the same method as the airflex. However i then heard through this website i think that the Triso Super 10 is not suitable in this situation behind dry-lining. I am now back to the dry-lining insulation backed plasterboard, yet i'm weary as if this is good enough for my requirements.

Could somebody please set me straight, it's doing my ceann in, theres a serious need for a website of some discription or an organising body to test and rate technologies, as there is alot there stating that they are somewhat better than the next product, yet is not until one year down the line you can tell if the material you used is any good.

If anybody has used different methods of insulation and what circumstances there were would help me greatly, i am using a heat-pump to heat my hot water and space heating will be done by underfloor heating.

thanks guys

hi joe,i'm similar to yourself spent ages looking into one "great" method only to hear about another then change notion again, was going with outside insulation now i'm not its drove me crazy ,everything has a down side as far as i can see.a friend is using 140mm aerobord platinum in his cavity(150mm cavity), u value 0.19,300mm mineral wool for roof i think u value 0.13,and for the floor 125mm springvale platinum floorshield(aerobord) 0.17w/m2k.i'm going to use either 140mm aerobord costs about 8.50m2 stg dont know euro price or kingspan do a 100mm board that when used in a 140mm cavity still gives you the 40mm air gap and a u value of 0.19,either 300mm mineral wool in roof .13w/m2k or kingspan say 150mm thermapitch between joists with 37.5mm insulated plasterboard or 200mm thermapitch between joists both reach .16 w/m2k,that leaves attic useable.for floor probably kingspan or aerobord again.hope this is some help to you

Perhaps you should set your goals first

ie

I want my floor to exceed current building regs U-values by x%.
I want my roof to exceed current building regs by x%
I want to use an environmental neutral product
I am willing to spend x% per sq metre for a higher spec product
I trust x company or

Etc etc and then work towards that. You’ll do you head in trying to look at all the solutions out there.

It seems that you are generally happy with Kingspan but they have no solution which shows insulation in the cavity and insulation on the internal wall as I think that this raises some vapour/dew point issues which I can’t comment on but is worth looking into. Even if you find very little info on it, ask yourself why no (if any) insulation company specifies it as a solution.

hi Joe

i share your frustration and have asked for a company who can come in offer domestic advice and then install.

I am looking for a solution for floor insulation, walls insulation (have no cavity) and undecided as to dry lining pros and cons

also last year we converted out garage into an extra room and the builder assured me he used quality kingspan product (polystyrene backed pasterboard) but the room is really cold in the winter and dont know why this is the case

also, the sei website is close to useless for addressing such queries apart from offering general advice but does not give info on specific companies who will assist

Did you check to see if your dry-lining is running upto the joists, it should be blocked off with the ceiling board first, this will prohibit any down draft from the attic area between the battens behind the kingspan. This may be your problem draft causing the cold.

Try any of the insulation installation specialist companies for advice, 2 of the larger ones in dublin would be U Value Installations, Energy Saver. Any of these would give you all the info you need

if you contact kingspan, hitherm ,quinntherm the tech dep will give you all the info you need.all of them suggested 60 or 80mm boards and insulated interior slabs as an option but also agreed that its probably better to leave a plasterd wall for a thermal mass.putting in wider boards (properly) in the cavity also leaves insulation done in one go,no starting again inside although some say drylined walls dont show settlement cracks much which is an advantage
