Insulating the attic

What's the best way to go about this - is it "simply" a case of buying insulation and rolling it out between the rafters & joists?

What type of insulation is best and where can I get it.

All advice appreciated - just bought an old house with no sarking or insulation to the attic!
 
I think the Sustainable Energy Ireland website also had a good guide to the process, google SEI and see what it throws up.
 
Here is a link to a Scandinavian website with excellent insulation detail.
Just click on the part of the house you want to insulate and you will get a lot of options.

I'm insulating my attic this weekend.
I'm using Space Blanket. It's probably a bit more expensive than the normal blanket insulation but it's mess/itch free:
