just been quoted €700 for supply and fit a standard domestic consumer unit to replace an old fuseboard, plus two new sockets, plus check/upgrade earthing in a small two bed house.
seems a bit steep for a few hours work. any comments?

I'd imagine its a bit more than a few hours work.. If your house doesnt have an MCB board in it, it probably means the house hasnt been wired in at least 25 years, meaning there's no way the earthing is up to scratch for starters! Sounds like there a good bit of earthing to be done..
