Installing an external cold water tap

I live in a standard semi-d with shared access between houses.

I want to install an external cold water tap for a hose etc

The kitchen sink faces this shared access and the drain etc is on the outside of the wall.

Is there much work (for a plumber) involved installing a tap here?

Aldi had a decent quality kit for doing this on offer recently, included everything you need, the plumbing connection just clamps onto existing pipework and self-seals once tightened up. You just need to be competent enough to to drill a hole through the wall and not do any damage,

I think the Aldi kit was about €20, you can probably get something similar in the likes of B&Q but pay a bit more.

Just read the instrcutions very carefully.

I did one a few months ago, Had a bit of water in the kitchen but that was because I didn't have the self tapping screw screwed in enough. Works fine now but pressure is a bit weak.

Actually B&Q had one for 12 euros at the time.

As for drilling a hole through the wall. I drilled along where the waste pipe exited. Made the job much easier.

Don't forget to have an insulation jacket for the tap for next winter, unless you never get frostsover there.

Thanks for all the tips - will pick one up in B&Q so.

What size hole - ball park - do I need to drill under sink through wall next to the waste pipe?

It's a doddle for a plumber or handyman, I see some are charging €60 for the job at the moment, and I would be expecting that to include all the parts.

Think I used a 15 or 16 mm drill bit

A 16mm masonary bit and upward. The bit will have to be long enough to go through your two block and cavity wall. If you drill too fast from inside out, you risk taking a chunk of plaster on the outside wall as you push through.

If you can get a plumber to do it for €50 or €60 parts and labour. then get them. this job could break your heart.

you can get taps that will shut of the supply inside the house when turned from outside. this will eliminate any cracked pipes due to frost.
