Inexpensvie water softening system for rented accommodation

Hi I have moved into rented accomodation with very hard water. I would like to solve this but do not want to put in an expensive water softening system. I would like to install something cheap enough that will work. I have a plumber that will do it. He recommended that as I am only renting I should look into the cheaper options but he couldn't recommend anything. Please could someone let me know of an effective solution on the cheaper side of things?

I don't know what you mean by inexpensive but there is an ad in the Home supplement of the Sunday Times which offers solutions for about €600. We put one in two years ago for €800.
 
Would anyone know/recommend 'the limescale doctor'?

Does it work?

An alternative is a water softner I found for €360.

Unsure about which would be the better option.

I was hoping for something a bit cheaper as I'll only be here for a year. Not sure if this is opssible but thought it would be worth a try!
