importing non Japanese cars

Can a person go to a regular car dealer e.g Ford and get them to import a car that is not sold in Ireland. (Not a Japanese car or a vintage/classic car.)
 
Don't see why not.

The VRT man will be interested in his filthy take however, based on his valuation.

What are you thinking about buying Marge?
 
I was in the states earlier this year and we hired out a 4L Mustang. Now....I like my cars and currently I drive an Impreza (not the real thing....yet!) but I was taken with the Mustang. I was dieing to drive it and it was as good as I hoped. A little disappointing inside but a great car to drive. 4L engine means 1300euro tax a year and a mind blowing insurance premium. But I am at a stage when I think it could be my only chance to own something as costly as that. They retail at 20000 US dollars new.

I am just toying with the idea and getting some figures. A FORD garage would take their cut as well as the VRT man and there is the cost of shipping. I was just wondering if there are some restrictions about buying in cars that are not available in the irish market.
 
Here's a used Mustang Convertible on a UK site.

£32,000 (€50,000):eek:. Ridiculous for a car that sells for $20,000.

Don't think there are any restrictions (the only ones I could think of would be around safety and emissions, and it seems unlikely that a modern car would fail on these, but who knows?)

Costs:
VRT
VAT (if new, but the car above includes UK VAT)
Road Tax
Insurance (no matter what age you are, a 4L import is gonna cost ya)
Petrol (god knows what the efficiency is like on this car, the Ford GT is horrendous)
RHD conversion (if desired)

I see Carzone have a 1975 RHD version (classic car so lower tax and insurance, but a 5L engine) for €14,000.

I know it's a cool car, but is it worth paying around €60,000? Think of what else you could have..........
 
Don't forget about 10% excise duty for non EU manufactured cars.

Economically it just doesn't work I'm afraid.

The only reasonable way of doing it is to buy or import a "vintage" car of 30+ years.

Minimal VRT (€40 I think to clear it) and get a ZV registration, nominal road tax and classic insurance.

The only issue is the Mustang only became a decent drivers car in 2004. I drove one (a GT of 4.65 litres and 300bhp) in Florida in May and was quite impressed.

This guy always has a few nice looking cars for sale, but mostly lhd.

There is a 04 3.8L Mustang for sale in Limerick I've viewed this car myself and it looks amazing the price is a bit steep though although nothing is ever set in stone with car dealers you may be able to get the price down.

It's a v6 - nah! Price isn't that silly though, and Moloney's are commercial like most dealers. Wave some cash and you'd never know.

Would have to be a v8 for me. Might as well but hung for a sheep as a lamb.
 
Current Autocar magazine has a feature about importing a new Mustang into the UK. While there would be some differences for importing into Ireland, much of the process would be the same.
