Importing cars from Japan to the UK via Ireland?

Hi I've just got a quick question about weither it's still feasible to import a car from Japan into the UK via Ireland or not. The purpose being for it to be a car less than 10 years old and to avoid the UK SVA testing scheme.

I have experience over the years of importing cars for myself and family directly to the UK, but have always stuck to cars older than 10 years old so as to only require an MOT test for registration.

If I were to import into Ireland first would I be hit with the 25-30% VRT tax (making it not worthwhile) or is there still a scheme for getting temporary Z-Plates and not paying the tax if the car is not to be kept in Ireland? I assume even if there is, the UK DVLA probably don't accept Z-plated cars as properly registered in the EU (and exempt from SVA), knowing what they are like. Though I'd ask anyway.

Many thanks to any more knowledgable contibuters on here that can add anything.
