Importing a Classic Vehicle

Can anyone tell me more about import taxes/duties/Vrt related to importing a classic vehicle?

I am considering importing a classic volkswagen camper van from the US.
But I want to do my sums first. The problem is that VRT is not calculated until after the vehicle is imported and seen by an official. Is the value of the vehicle likely to be estimated at the current Irish market level or at the price for which the van was purchased?

I have never imported a vehicle before and would like to chat to some-one who is more experienced particularly with a "classic" type.

Thanks

Boards.ie has a classic cars forum which might help you. Also try www.eircooled.com which is a very helpful club for vehicles with air cooled engines (like your camper van) - you need to join to access the forum though, which would cost you €20 but would be worth it.

A car needs to be more than thirty years old to qualify for classic car motor tax; you can get classic car insurance through car clubs for cars older than twenty years.

Not sure about VRT for classic cars. Here is a useful link on VRT

I have imported 4 of these beauties over the years with two from the US. Head over to http://type2ireland.org and look around. Lots of info about importing, insuring etc.

Word of warning - Some of these look in great condition from pictures. I importrd what looked like an imaculate 1964 spilt screen but it cost me €11k to get roadworthy and useable.

Good luck!
