Importing a car from the UK?

Hi all,
I've been thinking of buying a used 4x4 suzuki Grand Vitara from the UK. I know VRT will have to be paid when I bring it back but are there any other charges I need to know about? As far as I know I will only have to pay VAT if the car has a mileage of less than 6000 miles. Are there any savings to be made? Has anyone out there imported a car before? any help appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Do a search in this forum, loads of stuff about importing cars

UPDATE!
found a car on the internet. got it checked. Travelled over on the Friday. Went to see the dealer and car on the Saturday morning. Negotiated 10% discount off the price. (Dealers were a lot more obliging than over here). Travelled back on Saturday night. Paid VRT on Monday. EASY! I couldn't believe how easy it was. I kept thinking there must be a catch but apart from VRT there is no catch. I've now got a 26K motor I paid 19K for and its still got 18 months manufacturers warranty on it. I'm very happy!:)
I'd recommend it to everyone buying a used car, although I would say buy from a franchised dealer! Thanks for everyones help and advice!

Congrats on the purchase.

Why buy from a franchised dealer if you are getting a check done? The same car bought privately will have the same dealers warranty.

Just out of curiousity

Definitely going to look at this myself next year.

What did you buy?
Where did you get it?
Have they a website?

I assume you brough a sterling draft for most and some cash?

Best of luck with the new car.

Also worth checking if a similiar bargain can be found in the north.

Obviously depends on the make/model your looking for and the individual sellers to see if the same savings can be made. Worth checking the cost differences and factoring in the saving on flight/ferry/time on buying up north. As long as you have a second driver to go up with you can all be done in a day and be home again for dinner with the new motor!

definitive guide to same over on boards.

try autotrader.co.uk or

Bought a '05 suzuki grand vitara from grenson suzuki in crewe.(I'd definitely recommend them) brought over cash but you can wire cash to a car dealer's account which is probably safer.
