Importing a car from Northern Ireland… change of legislation !!

Yes I guess so …

As long as he registers the car in NI in his name and not a company name for at least 3 months and has a NI address.
What about a car that has a GB mainland reg plate?

If it has a UK mainland plate it doesn’t fulfill the 3 criteria (from my first post) for importing it into Ireland VAT free.

I thought the registration platr didn't matter anymore you just need to be able to evidence its been registered to a private owner in Northern ireland for a reasonable period of time before importing in Ireland

If you are able to show evidence that it was once registered to a northern Irish person for more than 3 months think you might be ok, but either way take all this evidence in advance of bringing it over, to your local VRT office and see what they say.

If buying a used car from a motor dealer in NI, what are the norms around haggling?

Successfully re registered the NI car at the VRT office today. The fact that it was owned by/in the name of a dealer was not even mentioned. I avoided customs fees, tariffs, VAT and VRT. Quite happy about all that.

Good result - well done !! I'm in more or less the same situation. Haven't proceeded with purchase yet because I would like to get some reassurance on VAT and customs questions. Would you mind telling me which VRT center you used ?

The op mentions that car has to be in private ownership for 3 months or reasonable period of time. Im looking at buying 2024 registered in april 2024 as new in NI. The garage sent me on the v5c form and said thats all i need and the fact it was registered new in NI that it doesn't need a private owner, the Belfast address of the garage is on the v5c form, is this free from vat and customs so?

Also are hybrid plug ins exempt from any vrt?
Thanks

If the car has been registered in NI for more than 3 months (to an Individuals name with a NI address) regardless of where it came from this is acceptable.
I’m looking to do this.
I’ve heard that 3 months is considered a “reasonable period of time”.
Can I just check there’s no more scrutiny over this and they’ll happily accept a V5C or MOT document showing individual ownership 3 months ago? Do the guys in the VRT/NCT office just process this without further investigation?
Three months seems a relatively short period of time that it could be open to manipulation for people to purchase cars from GB and easily avoid the VRT and VAT if they happen to “know a guy” from NI.
I’m looking to purchase such a car but don’t want to be stung with unanticipated new requirements because it has only been in NI for 4 months. Do they look for further evidence other than the dated V5C?

Did you just show the V5C cert? How long had it been in NI for? Did they look for anything else?

What type of car ICE or EV did you import. Did you discuss with VRT office before taking the plunge. Was the VRT similar to what you expected.

PHEV, i rang vrt and they said only vrt applicable before i bought. VRT calculator on revenue website was accurate to within 50euro of what i paid.

Waterford. Private ownership is only for cars that have came from mainland UK to the north. Cars originally registered in NI exempt from that condition.
A dealer who brings cars from the UK weekly told me the same.
The OP needs to be updated.
