Import duties and sale of goods to UK

Hi there,

I plan on importing items from the US and selling them to the UK and Irish market through an online store. If anyone could answer some or all of these questions I'd be most appreciative.

1. Customs duty. The duty for one of the things I plan to import is 2.5%. If the product costs $20 from the US but has a value of €30 here, is the 2.5% calculated on the import value or the Irish market value?

2. Is an export license required to sell goods to the UK/EU or is it treated the same as selling to the Irish market?

3. Is VAT charged to consumers based in the UK who purchase goods from my online store?

Can't help with point 1.

2. For most goods - no

3., You have to charge vat on anything you sell unless they can give you a vat number to exempt them from vat.
They can ask to be sold the items without the vat but that is rare. If a business if buying from you,
they can claim back the vat anyway. Selling without vat makes a little bit of work for you. I always avoided it.
