Hi, I have just moved to Ireland to be with my boyfriend who is from Dublin. I speak three languages and was hoping to get a job at the aiport. Most agencies deal in customer service work (sitting at a computer all day) but its nice to be running about looking after people.
I have a degree in leisure management and would really appreciate if someone would have information on any jobs at the Airport. (Dublin)
I now realise the phrase, as my boyfriend puts it, "Its not what ya know, its... ;o)
So the paper has not been good to me lately...
Great site whoever thought of it!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks
J

It's not clear what sort of job you are looking for or why you want to be located specifically in the airport so all I can suggest is that you contact the various service companies (e.g. [broken link removed] , ServisAir etc.) and perhaps the hotels etc. located in Dublin airport and enquire about vacancies.

What with Ryanair & one thing & another 'customer service' at the airport is a distant memory for most of us .........

Some of the up market Hotels ( front desk / marketing ) might be a happy hunting ground - dunno - or maybe some sort of tourist guide work

If you have never done this sort of thing before then be warned its a lot of hard work !

What languages do you have ?

Are you an air-head? (sorry - bad joke)

Seriously though, if you had a TEFL qualification (teaching english as a foreign language), you could maybe get year-round work in Dublin proper. The airport is kinda in the middle of nowhere (apologies to Swords people). A friend of mine does this and he's very busy all year but he enjoys the work. Be warned though, you will lose people!!

Thank you all..

My languages are Dutch, German and English. I will keep checking here and hopefully an opportunity will come along...
Thanks again!!! Appreciated..

No offence but I wouldn't necessarily pin my hopes on the dream job appearing here on AAM! You'd want to follow some of the advice posted above and get out and look for a suitable job yourself. Maybe contact some businesses directly or else consider contacting a reputable agency that specialises in whatever sort of work you're looking for. There seems to be plenty of work out there these days. Good luck.

but it's nice to be running about looking after people.

Huh? Have you been to the airport lately? There's not a whole lot of running, or looking after, going on there.

In fact, you have to check with your SIPTU shop steward before you can either run or look after someone.

jobs

Hi J, welcome to Ireland!!

Here's what I suggest:

Take a trip out to the airport and spend a couple of hours there. Observe people working in the jobs you would like to do. Try to get to talk to some of them. It's best to try and have a word when they're not too busy!! (I don't know what time of the day that might be....!) Say..."hi, I wonder if I you could help me. I'm hoping to get into the same line of work as yours, and I was wondering if you had any advice for me on the best way to go about it?" They will probably say something like "send in your CV", and that's when you should ask, "Who should I address it to?". Have a pen and paper ready and take down the name of the person in charge of hiring. Also, ask for the person's title and write that down too! And don't forget to ask to what address you should sent it. Then when you're sending in your CV and covering letter you can address it to the correct person and that will increase your chances of it being more effective.

If you get no reply after a week, it might be worth ringing the people you sent your CV to. Phone up, introduce yourself and say, "I wrote to you last week, and I was just calling to follow that up. I wonder if you've had a chance to look at my CV and if there are any employment opportunities in your company at the moment?". If they say "no", thank them and tell them you'd appreciate if they would keep you in mind should a future vacancy arise.

If you go out to the airport as I suggested, I suggest you dress smartly and think of the process as an opportunity to "sell yourself", to make a good impression on your future employer! Who knows, you might even get to talk to a manager or two in the airport so bring a few copies of your CV with you just in case!

When you get talking to people who are doing the kind of job you'd like to do, try to get as much information as possible from them. Ask about their jobs, what they like about it, the hours, the conditions etc and how they got into that line of work. (But don't ask about the pay...that might appear too intrusive!).

You said your boyfriend says.."it's not what you know, it's who you know"...so get out there and get to know people in the industry that you want to work in!!!

Good luck with your job hunt!

Thanks AM

.. really good advice from you.. I have been onto a few agencies today but as you say, its a case of getting out there and maybe meeting the right people who can put you in touch with the "right people"..
Thanks again and have a great weekend!

an idea

You're welcome J! I did have a good weekend thanks...hope yours was good too! I was reading the Sunday Tribune yesterday and I came across an ad for a service that might be of interest to you. The company is called [broken link removed] They operate a "meet and greet" service at Dublin Airport for VIP's, corporate clients and for any passengers who want to pay for it.

Check out their website and if you think it's something you might be interested in, why not send your CV to their Director!

AM, your very sweet!!

.. I will get onto to it straight away! Excatly what I am looking for! Will let you know how I get on soon.
Thanks again!!!

)

I'm glad to be able to help J! Do let me know how you get on. The thing to remember when you're hunting for a job is...there must be hundreds of jobs in the airport that you'd enjoy doing...and you only want one job, so the odds are in your favour! With a little bit of tenacity you can make it!

P.S. Thanks Sueellen for editing my post to make that address into clickable link!
