I'm an adult...... "Conflict of Interest"?

Ok, I may be stretching the imagination a little here but.. I was watching the programme last night "I'm an adult get me out of here" and something struck me. The presenter said that he had put a deposit down in a house in the devlopment in which the canditate was purchasing. In fact this week's candidate bought a house in the same development as the girl who was on last week - Rathevan (sp?) in Portlaoise, Co. Laois.

Obviously the show is geared primarily to FTB's, but I think that after both candidates 2 weeks in a row purchased in the same development as the presenter I would think as a little odd. Obviously this particular development is getting huge publicity thanks to the show, which can only "enhance" the presenter's investment.

Any thoughts??

Re: I'm an adult...... "Conflict of Interest"??

I watched it and was also suspicous,I live about 5 minutes from the development but I think they are buying primarily for value for money,I have 2 friends who have moved from Dublin to buy in the same area, but not same development.Portlaoise is 50 Minutes to the red cow and it's all motorway as more people realise this I'm sure more will make the move and I thought this is why he believed there was room for market appreciation. On the other hand there is another development on the Mountmellick side of the town, which offers the same style of house but you get all your kitchen appliances, carpets, tiling included for around the same price,so I was suspicous as to why these were not looked at as a Value for money proposition particularly for FTB,one of my friends bought there because he only needed a bed, couch and tv to furnish it!!

Re: I'm an adult...... "Conflict of Interest"??

The presenter also bought a house there as well, I dont think it was done on purpose, if I knew a place for good value and new someone who bought there and then knew someone else who was interested in a house in the same area I would recommend same, I think the presenter is quite good in the programme aswell

Re: I'm an adult...... "Conflict of Interest"??

How can there not be some conflict of interest if he is touting places he bought in?? Your not the presenter by any chance Dodo ;) or is that my cynical side coming out :D

Re: I'm an adult...... "Conflict of Interest"??

There is no conflict of interest because he stated his own interest in the development. If he hadn't stated his position, or he had a deal with that developer, then you'd have a true conflict of interest.

By the same logic you could have said that as a property investor presenting a program which is simply property porn and further stokes interest in any and all property he has a conflict of interest. This is obviously not the case.

Re: I'm an adult...... "Conflict of Interest"??

I bought one of those houses and they are long since sold out so "advertising" them on the show would be pointless at this stage. Also they didn't mention the builder's name.
I was speaking to the builder this morning about something else and we were chatting about the show and I can assure you that there is nothing cyncial in his recommendation of these houses. For the record, the girl who bought last week bought a house in the same area (i.e Ratheven) but in a different development. I suppose the show is purely highlighting the good value for people to buy in Portlaoise. Last week the girl was from Naas and coincidentally found Portlaoise was where she would get the best value. That's how I see it anyway.

As far as I'm aware the house the girl bought last week, was indeed in Portlaoise but not in Rathevan.

Good point thats it in a nutshell I suppose........but I'm still a cynical git:D

back to the programme it'self - what did you think of it?
because i have to say he came across as a lad with more money than sense?
I definately would have rented out his new house and stayed in his parents house "minding" it for the 3 years they were in France?

Whether or not it's a conflict of interest - it strikes me as a failure of research if the programme-makers keep on pointing the participants in the direction of the same development...

But yes, it does seem to fulfil all the criteria for a conflict of interest:-

But of course, in contemporary Ireland, there is no such thing as a conflict of interest when it comes to property...

In which case he would have been avoiding tax and down the road would have been liable for a significent sum (stamp + penalties + interest).

I guess he had more sense than some.

He might rent it out yet. The houses aren't completed yet and that was filmed about 3 months ago. The shot of him carrying in the arm chair was for the cameras only!
