Illness benefit+redundancy

My brother in-law applied and got voluntary redundancy [finishing work in March] in the meantime he was diagnosed with a heart problem and is presently out sick, would he be able to stay on illness benefit until he is better rather than signing on for Jobseekers benefit and is there any repercussions for same. Thanks in advance.

He can remain on illness benefit until he recovers and is available for work.

Thank you, so does that mean that he does not go to Social welfare office at all when he leaves work to sign on and waits until he is physically ok and is off illness benefit?

He doesn't have to go to the social welfare office until such time that he is fit for work, just send in the certs. I was in the very same possition myself a few years ago.

Hijacking this thread...hope no-one minds.
If a student is in full time education in Uni and working weekends to support themselves can they claim illness benefit if they are off ill. Mature student and has 11 years PRSI contributions paid.
