Ill health retirement query

Am I correct that if you retire due to I'll health in the public service you can get extra added years towards pension _ I'm told up to 6 ?
If its correct does it apply no matter what your age?

My recollection from my time in the service is that additional years are not granted automatically, each case is decided on its merits.
If your minimum retirement age is 60, and you are granted added years, you wouldn't get any added years for time beyond 60 - for example, if you were 57, the max number of added years you could get would be 3. If you were retiring after 60, no added years would be granted.

You should check with your HR or superannuation section to see the exact rules for your employment.
 
I think the maximum entitlement for added years is calculated with reference to a retirement age of 65 (even if "normal retirement" is available from 60 - except for some "uniformed" sectors). The maximum amount is 6 years 243 days. But it depends on factors such as length of service, full-time/part-time, etc. An applicant needs a report from a Consultant or GP and (depending on HR for the sector) a form completed by them also. This will then be referred to the relevant Occupational Health for adjudication. I have always thought that no extra years will be given after 60 _ am I wrong in this? Can it be granted over 60? I am unsure after reading everything.
 
A former colleague of mine in a local authority considered applying for ill-health early retirement so made some informal enquiries. She was advised that as she was already over 60, she couldn't be granted extra years (she didn't have full service, and wasn't going to have by 65).
 
I think it is only possibe up to 60 for pre-2004 people, and 65 if "normal retirement age" is 65 (post 2004).

I can't reply definitively, but a friend of mine who had to retire from the HSE at age 62 without full service due to a terminal illness was informed that he couldn't avail of added years.
