If You Can, Get Out of Ireland for a Few Weeks in Winter - DUH!

I’ve been in touch with some fellow 70+ years people in Ireland. The country went through a recent colder spell. They’ve used more fuel than budgeted and now must be extra careful for the fuel costs for the rest of January and a February and likely March and April too.

Some are informing me that they’d love to be us lording it in warmer Spain. When I inform them all you have got to do is book accommodation in sunnier climes and buy airline tickets early where you’ll save a few more bob. There’s a shortage of Irish people in Spain in the cold Irish months. Brits look on long term breaks differently to us Irish and turn negative time in the UK to positive time near the Mediterranean.

If you want peace of mind and more freedom do something about it and the lifestyle is good. Now is a good time to plan for next winter/spring.

I'll be getting out for a week in April.....that should count for something.
It wasn't much more expensive than three days in a couple of hotels that we tried in Ireland...

Some day Oh Great Purple One when you no longer have to fight through motor traffic to get to work and you’re retired and out to grass you can put your feet up and plan your winters in the Sun. If I’m around, you’re welcome to join me in my local cafe in Spain where we can scoff free tapas and pay €1.20 for a coffee.

A mild start with temperatures up to 10c here this morning as Ireland is once again one of the warmest countries in Europe. Meanwhile parts of Spain have got down to -9.9c this morning. A mainly dry and cloudy day ahead but some patchy drizzle at times and odd sunny spell.

Maybe Ireland is the place to be in winter!
 
Whoever named the 'sunny' south East must have been on the Greenland job also.
 
I too did a " Leper " and am two weeks into a four week sojourn to Southern Spain. Last February we had a 4 day stay in Spain and I could not believe the difference seeing the blue sky for the 4 days made to our mood and well being.
So we planned a longer stay in 2025. We are not disappointed. We travelled out of Ireland ahead of the very cold weather. We installed a " nest " in the house to ensure that we could control the heating remotely. There were a great deal of power cuts so the nest allowed the heating to reset and start heating once the power was restored.
When we were looking for accommodation here I made sure that we had heating as the temperature can drop sharply at night time.
We are enjoying the coffees- €1.20/€1.50 and a glass of wine for €3.50.
The cost of bus fares are extremely low.
We did not want to rent a car so chose places that we could reach by bus.
We also stay in the town so we walk everywhere.
Retirement does not happen until summer 2026 but we are already planning on longer stays.
Only positives so far.
 
Gotta agree, the weather has been great this week, out each morning for a walk in shorts even saw people playing sports in tee shirts
The weather may have been very cold last week, so what its not as if every week of the winter is bad now that climate change is here
I've done the "Lep", 4 winters in Spain cycling but the last one, winter '21/22 was one of the worst winters I've ever spent anywhere
And when that happens or is happening while your abroad, there's only one thing going through your mind as Dorothy would say
"There's no place like home"
 
Ah! - Shucks Guys - When we’re in Spain, some visiting Irish people seek me out occasionally. I don’t know why, but it is good to meet other English speaking people thinking along the same lines as Ol’ Lep. Most of the people we meet there are Spaniards. No prob for me as my Spanish is good. Lots of Spaniards like to speak in English to improve their English skills. No man is an Island so it’s pretty warming to meet the likes of me - a guy who doesn’t blow his own trumpet and is content not to dominate any conversation. Enjoy the holiday weekend and I hope it remains dry and sunny in Ireland. Must run, Mrs Lep just returning from her wine trip.

Added Later:- There are so-called Irish Pubs everywhere. Most of them are as Irish as Buckingham Palace. I never witnessed anybody being pressganged into them. So, if you don’t like them just stay away from them. But, I got what-I-thought good financial advice in one, much better than the qualified financial chancers who advised and charged me to buy AIB and Eircom shares back in the day.

I travel twice a year with 5 friends to either Spain or Portugal for football games and have been doing so for years , at this juncture I’ve visited 17 La Liga grounds .
Invariably we’ve ended up at Irish bars to watch football on TV or late in the evening as they’re the last ones to close .
Being an affable bunch we’ve enjoyed many an interesting conversation with other Irish people many of whom have interesting stories to tell , I think as a Nation we are fine raconteurs .
