Hi everyone. I need a bit of advice here.

After my wife losing her job and my company closing down, we are both on welfare for the past 4 months. We have applied for numerous jobs with no success so far. We are both doing courses with fas at the moment.

My wife receives €196 JSA and claims for me (because of being self employed) and our 3 year old son. This brings in a total of €355 a week.

This is a list of what we get.

€355/wk welfare
Medical card for family.
Mortgage supplement €425 (we pay €125/mt to add to this) Interest only for the next couple of months.
Entitled to €250 back to school money when it comes around.

My question is, if my wife takes a part time job of 20 hours per week, will we lose everything from welfare?

BTW, Of all the jobs i have applied to, i have yet to get a reply. And believe me, i have applied for many since being unemployed.

Thanks in advance.

Heres a bit of info others maybe able to give you more.

Part-time or casual work
If you get part-time or casual work (up to and including 3 days per week), you may still be paid a proportion of your Jobseeker's Allowance. However, you must show that you are trying to get full-time employment.

JSA & Work

Are you confusing JSA with JSB. Is your wife not entitled to JSB based on her PRSI contributions in which she may be able to work her 20 hours and entitled to sign for the days she is not working.

Thanks for the replies, but i'm really asking will we keep medical card/ and interest relief payment?

Thanks again

The amount of Mortgage Interest Supplement (MIS) you receive will be afffected by any additional household income. You may still have an entitlement, because while there will be wages coming in, the amount of Jobseeker's being paid will probably be reduced.

You would lose all entitlement to MIS if the hours worked are 30 or more, regardless of the income earned, as that is considered full-time work.

Re medical cards, there is a retention clause for persons taking up part-time or full-time work, however you must have been in receipt of certain SW payments for 12 months before this applies. You should check with your local HSE office regarding continued entitlement to the medical card.
