IEDR and profits

According to [broken link removed]:
The IEDR (www.iedr.ie) is an independent not-for-profit organisation ...
According to this:
The IE Domain Registry, which runs the .ie internet domain name, has reported after-tax profits of €865,000 for 2005, marginally lower compared with the previous year.

Can somebody explain this seeming contradiction?

Does "not for profit" mean that profit is not the main driver but that profits may be made and ploughed back into the business (as opposed to being paid out to shareholders/investors or whoever)?

It would [broken link removed] so...
Our financial position in 2005 facilitated the introduction of our third and most significant price reduction yet, with registration and renewal rates reduced by 20% for direct registrations with the IEDR and by 26% for the .ie resellers, as of 1st January 2006. This latest price reduction means that prices for .ie domain names have been reduced by over 40% over the past 3 years. During this 3 year period net volumes increased by 68%, staff numbers reduced by 25% and operating costs decreased by 50%. [...]

Commenting on the results, Mr. David Curtin, IEDR Chief Executive, said:
"I am pleased to report that the IE Domain Registry's (IEDR) financial performance was very strong in 2005, posting profit for the third consecutive year. Our robust financial performance has enabled us to reinvest our financial resources on customer service, process automation and infrastructure improvements to deliver improved value, choice, service and security to our customers, further developing the .ie domain space."

A lot of ccTLD registries are managed in a similar fashion. There's nothing strange about them posting a profit and in most cases this would be churned back into the operation or used to facilitate price reductions etc.,
I posted about this earlier:
