ok the beta version seems to be open to the public

Have been using it on and off bit of an improvement

Stilll prefer Firefox

Below is the d/l link which is public

Must stress this is only the BETA version

Unfortunately it's still necessary to go back to it for some sites - most notably Windows Update and other MS sites...

can never go back to IE after firefox

It's IE7 Beta 2 actually, and it does certainly seem to be aimed at the Opera / Firefox users. Check out the Register article.

However, you might want to read this article before installing it.

I am planning to stick with Firefox.

However, inertia and the number of new PCs which will all soon have IE7 preinstalled may end up killing of Firefox.

Opera Mini - Java-Based Mobile Phone - Full Internet HTML Bowser

On a related topic, has anyone tried the new Opera Mini Java application on their mobile?

I've looked at it for a day or so and it seems pretty good so far. HTML pages are cached on the Opera site (on a proxy server) and only stripped-down HTML is sent to your phone, which will reduce comms calls versus the full Opera Mobile, which brings everything down and then discards what it can't display.

Both products have Opera's full screen rendering, which aims to fit more of the usable content into the phone's display.

Best of all, Opera Mini does not require a smartphone - it works on most Java compatible phones (running Java MIDP 1 or 2). Obviously, it works best on phones with large displays.
