just looking for opinions. My husband and I are hoping to build later in the year. I'm a first time buyer but my husband put his name on a mortgage for his brother a number of years ago. My husband never claimed mortgage relief on this and I'm wondering would he be entitled to claim it now?I understand he wouldn't be classified as a FTB in the eyes of the bank when applying for a mortgage but would he be in the eyes of the revenue? thanks

In relation to TRS your husband would be considered a FTB.

However TRS for FTB's will be phased out at the end of this year.

Possibly only for 4 years in arrears, and then only if your husbands brother could be considered a "a dependent relative (i.e. widowed parent, elderly relative) for whom you are claiming a dependent relative tax credit.". Otherwise, the relief seems to be only for interest on a mortgage for your own house.
