Husband moved out, how will this affect our rent allowance?

My husband walked out on me after a row and although I want to work it out I don't think he does. We receive rent allowance jointly as both on disability allowance, how is this going to effect us and does it mean I'm going to lose my home? We are in our 50's and privately rent a 3 bed cottage. All help/advise much appreciated.

Rent Supplement is subject to maximum rent limits, which vary by county and by family size. The maximum rent limit for a single person is lower than that allowed for a couple - the difference varies depending on the county.

The rent charged by the landlord may now be higher than the maximum rent limit allowed for single people for your area.

If your rent is higher than the maximum limit, you would normally be asked to renegotiate the rent with your landlord, or find alternative accommodation.

However, if you have specific housing needs due to your disability (for example, an adapted property for a wheelchair user), Rent Supplement can continue even if the rent is over the maximum limits.

You should contact the DSP office dealing with your Rent Supplement claim as soon as possible.

It might be possible to get someone to share, I'm not sure, but one thing that worries me is as this is a 3 bedroom cottage (small rooms) would they insist I move even if the rent could be lowered? Also my family will help me out with his share of the rent for now but what happens if he applies for housing benefit for himself and would we need to have a judicial separation in place first for him to be able to apply??
