I have been given a 40% paycut but am still expected to work 5 days a week. Anyone know if this is allowed?

Do you have an employment contract?
There may be an issue (and I am not a legal expert so caveat emptor) with breach of contract/ some employment legislation if the pay-cut is unilateral and without any change in employment terms.

I have a very basic contract that doesn't go into any such detail.

Be thankful you still have a job. What's the alternative, being made redundant?

I believe I should be able to get a part-time job to make up the lost earnings. I would definitely have options in that regard.

John Rambo if the op works for nothing he'll never be idle. i know a girl who's had two wage cuts since JAN and if her wages are cut any more it'll be cheaper for her to stay at home and for her to pay her employer.

JOB A regular activity performed in exchange for payment, especially as one's trade, occupation, or profession. thats the definition

How is this helpful? Because there's a recession every employer is entitled to screw his staff and its all ok because the alternative is being made redundant? Right
