I understand that I can only transfer €20k from my Bank of Ireland account to another Irish Bank online.

What is the process when I need to transfer a larger sum than this and how long should it take?

Thanks

Hi
With a new payee set up, it's usually Eur1k for first transaction and Eur20k per day thereafter, you can also put in a schedule of payments for consecutive days to prevent having to go in every day to activate a transfer.

I mean in a one off lump sum transfer?

How easy is it to do it in a branch? I’ve heard a few horror stories (e.g. “come back, you need to make an appointment”, older people given a detailed form that’s tricky to read, etc). Is there a way to do it over the phone?

I went to my AIB branch and I was given a form to complete. Provided it was in before 1 p.m. I was told it would be in the other bank by 4 p.m. that afternoon or at the latest the following morning. It was in the other person's account by 4.p.m on the day I handed in the form. Impressed.

I understand that the Bank of Ireland for some reason are incapable of a similar standard of service. It can take days before they even process the request.

I recently went into local BOI and had no issue with transferring well over 20k to pension company…can’t be done via cash service desk…transfer was performed by customer service staff…no appointment needed

I believe I posted on this very issue before - going into a bank branch is a PITA & almost always a waste of time.

Just do the transfer over 2 days.

I transferred €200k in my local BOI branch recently - just filled a form in and handed it to the cashier! I felt it was all a bit casual to be honest. I did the same in PTSB the next day - the manager checked it after a senior employee had input the details. Impressively thorough. No appointments needed in either case and both sums arrived the day of the transfer.

I'm not usually a fan of either branch but customer service does seem to have improved.

It is a few years ago now but I also transferred a large sum in BOI - not my account branch. No appointment and it was not a problem. I did come well IDed.

Why is it that some people can do this transfer in a Bank of Ireland branch and others can't do it? Surely the procedure must be the same in all cases?

Same here with a few very large transfers in branch with PTSB in the last few years. With the most recent one earlier this year the person of the required seniority to approve the transfer was on their lunch so I had to pop back after less than an hour. But I had other stuff to do in town in the meantime so that wasn't a problem for me. Maybe some people forget to bring ID and proof of address and that causes problems?

If you’re a BOI premier customer you can transfer higher amounts over the phone - at least 100k but not sure what the limit is. They call you back to confirm the order.
